Religious Freedom and Equal Rights in America: From the Founders to the 21st CenturyTension between belief in a divine order and the inherent equality of all has existed since the Pilgrims fled religious persecution by the Church of England to the New World. Reliance on God is embedded in the Declaration of Independence the U. S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, asserted on our money and, since 1954, recited as part of the Pledge of Allegiance. “Separation of church and state” and belief that “all men are created equal” also are integral to America’s foundational documents.
This class will examine the conundrum of balancing freedom of religious expression and freedom from discrimination in a democracy through the lenses of history, law, religion and ethics from colonial times to the present. The format is lecturette and facilitated class discussion, based on thought questions and optional out-of- class reading. This course is made up of four lecture days with multiple session enrollment opportunities throughout the year:

An eye-opener to better understanding the Constitution and the effects on past and future generations. The course awakened one's thoughts especially during this time of world's tremendous upheaval.
Fascinating topic. Supporting materials were thought-provoking and illuminating!
Ms.Gore's organized approach fostered a nonjudgmental learning environment. The separated-group format promoted discussion from different yet valid prospectives. She is an excellent instructor; very knowledgeable, patient, well-prepared, creative and above all pleasant.
"Hats Off" to Susan Gore's stimulating presentation during all four classes and boundless knowledge and enthusiasm encouraging all to engage honestly. I would not hesitate to take part in other programs she presents in the future. She more than whets one's appetite for more!
Susan was simply wonderful - broad based knowledge on subject - greatly encouraged discussion and dialog - and was able to keep us in the SANE model!
Susan greatly encouraged participation - very non judgemental, open and tactful! Great, safe atmosphere.
Susan's easy-going style encouraged participation and the discussions were excellent learning experiences.
Resilience: The Nature and Nurture of Meeting Life’s Challenges with BrioLife’s school of hard knocks is bruising, yet some people seem to bounce back more easily than others. This class will explore resilience from a variety of perspectives including biology, psychology, theology and personal experience. Class sessions will consist of lecturettes, in-class exercises and facilitated discussion. What exactly is resilience? Is there a difference between resilience and persistence? What special challenges and/or opportunities related to resilience come with advancing age? Can resilience be cultivated and, if so, how?

The subject of the course could have life-changing impliications for whatever direction one is pursuing!!
I think the interaction of the group made the class that more interesting. I made new friends that I would not have made just sitting and learning.
Self-deprecating comments made the presenter very easily relatable.
Susan creates a lovely feel in the room allowing class discussion to flourish.
