Resilience: The Nature and Nurture of Meeting Life’s Challenges with Brio
December 5 & 12, 2016

Life’s school of hard knocks is bruising, yet some people seem to bounce back more easily than others. This class will explore resilience from a variety of perspectives including biology, psychology, theology and personal experience. Class sessions will consist of lecturettes, in-class exercises and facilitated discussion. What exactly is resilience? Is there a difference between resilience and persistence? What special challenges and/or opportunities related to resilience come with advancing age? Can resilience be cultivated and, if so, how?

Religious Freedom and Equal Rights in America: From the Founders to the 21 st Century
Sept. 26, Oct. 3, Oct. 10, Oct. 17, 2016

Tension between belief in a divine order and the inherent equality of all has existed since the Pilgrims fled religious persecution by the Church of England to the New World. Reliance on God is embedded in the Declaration of Independence the U. S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, asserted on our money and, since 1954, recited as part of the Pledge of Allegiance. “Separation of church and state” and belief that “all men are created equal” also are integral to America’s foundational documents.

This class will examine the conundrum of balancing freedom of religious expression and freedom from discrimination in a democracy through the lenses of history, law, religion and ethics from colonial times to the present. The format is lecturette and facilitated class discussion, based on thought questions and optional out-of- class reading.

RFRa Madness and the Law of Unintended Consequences-A Conversation
June 23, 2016

What does a "mom and pop" florist in Oregon have in common with a $3.3 billion handicrafts corporation? Both have claimed their religious beliefs supersede legal mandates that require serving the public and their employees without regard to sex, sexuality or gender identity. In 2014, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to accept that argument from Hobby Lobby, allowing the handicrafts chain to  exclude certain types of birth control from the insurance coverage provided to their female employees. Twenty-two states also have passed Religious Freedom Restoration Acts (RFRAs) that claim to protect citizens by providing religious exemptions to nondiscrimination laws that include LGBT identity.

Join Dr. Susan Gore for a discussion of equal rights, freedom of religious expression and some unintended consequences that are likely to result from the current "RFRA Madness" sweeping across the US.
